Copan Radian available in the UK from Don Whitley Scientific

Radian® is a system designed by Copan that provides fully automated Kirby-Bauer susceptibility testing, eliminating the risk of human error and ensuring traceability. The solution comprises automated seeding of Mueller Hinton plates, application of antibiotic disks, robotic incubation of plates, imaging, zone size and SIR interpretation. This whole process is in line with EUCAST guidelines.

Due to WASPLab® being modular and scalable, the Radian® In-Line Carousel can be retrofitted into most existing WASPLab® platforms. The Radian® Expert Software can then be utilised via the WASPLab® WebApp.

A study has recently been conducted to compare automated equipment using Radian® to traditional manual disk diffusion methods. We’ll let the study speak for itself:

Paper: Evaluation of Automated Disk Diffusion Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Using Radian® In‑Line Carousel.

Author: Callebaut et al. (2024)

Topic:

  • To compare automation of disk diffusion AST using the WASPLab® with Radian® In-Line Carousel (Copan) with manual disk diffusion with semi-automated reading using SIRScan®.

5 Point Summary:

  • 135 bacterial strains were processed using the WASPLab® with Radian®  In-Line Carousel and manually in accordance with EUCAST guidelines.
  • The bacterial strains included Enterobacterales, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococci and Streptococcus.
  • Two antibiotic panels were used, containing 14 each. The first panel targets Gram-negatives and the second panel targets Gram-positives. The Gram-negative panel included ampicillin, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, nitrofurantoin, and temocillin. The Gram-positive panel included penicillin, oxacillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and vancomycin.
  • Categorical agreement was adequate with 95.3%, 96.3%, 93.8%, 97.3% and 98.0% for Enterobacterales, Enterococcus spp., P. aeruginosa, Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp., respectively.
  • The thermolability of the disks at room temperature was also assessed as it is often recommended to refrigerate disks once opened. They found they were still in acceptable quality after 4 days at room temperature in the WASPLab® Radian® In‑Line Carousel.

Key Takeaway:

  • The WASPLab® Radian® In‑Line Carousel is a highly reliable and accurate way of evaluating antimicrobial susceptibility, whilst also being economical and flexible.
