How a Private Biotech Lab Upgraded to OCEAView™

Who are you? “I am a researcher in a private biotechnology laboratory, working as part of a team of six. We are based at the CNRS site in Montpellier and specialise in biology and virology.” What are your monitoring needs? “We need to monitor all of our equipment to ensure the cold chain is maintained for stored reagents. We also need to verify the correct temperature conditions and CO₂ concentration in our incubators to safeguard the integrity of cell cultures used in biological tests.” Why did you decide to migrate to OCEAView™? “We have been using Dickson’s ThermoServer solution for the past five years. It works well, but it had one limitation in our case: if the system generated an alert, verification and acknowledgment had to be carried out on the computer where ThermoClient was installed, and that computer needed to be able to communicate with the server. Remote operations were not possible, which was a challenge for on-call staff during evenings, nights, and weekends.

The fact that OCEAView™ is web-based and a cloud platform was a major factor in our decision to migrate. We can now access the application from any computer or even a mobile phone to assess whether an excursion is critical before travelling to the lab. It makes things much easier!”

What do you think about Cobalt X data loggers?

“Cobalt X loggers are what you might call next-generation data loggers. They have changed the way we work, particularly with the ability to acknowledge an alarm directly on the logger’s screen without needing to log in to the application. That is extremely practical.

Additionally, Cobalt X allows us to connect significantly more sensors compared to data loggers, enabling us to reduce the number of data loggers while maintaining the same number of sensors.”

A word for customers who have still not migrated to OCEAView?

“I am genuinely pleased that we made the switch, and I would recommend others do the same. It does require some initial investment, but the benefits quickly outweigh the effort.

You can connect more sensors to a single data logger and even use Bluetooth-connected sensors, removing the risk of breaking cables - a common issue when using small -20°C freezers with drawers.
