Here at Don Whitley Scientific, we are proud of our involvement in the STEM community. Our daily business practices include the design, engineering and manufacturing of quality laboratory equipment, which is why we are passionate about promoting STEM. We are deeply committed to encouraging the next generation to venture into science, technology, engineering and maths, whether that is through guidance or by creating more opportunities.
Amongst our team in Bingley, we have multiple official STEM ambassadors, with several members of staff engaged in promoting STEM at local schools. Helping interview practice, giving talks about apprenticeships, explaining the routes into employment are just some of the ways we are involved.
Our ambassadors have given talks at various educational institutions. One such talk was recently given by DWS microbiologist Charlotte Austin at New College, Bradford. Our Managing Director, Paul Walton, expressed his own enthusiasm at the time, “I congratulate Charlotte on giving her first talk. Several of us are STEM Ambassadors so it is important to us to encourage students to consider a STEM career. Anything that DWS can do to help, we will always try to do.”
We have also sponsored university projects in the past, for example, we provided funding for a University of Nottingham team to enter the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition; the leading student competition in synthetic biology.
Encouraging the next generation is incredibly important to us here at DWS, which is why we offer a regular number of places on our apprenticeship scheme. We constantly strive to offer job opportunities and training to those who are passionate about a career in a STEM subject. We currently have 6 apprentices within our team who are completing engineering qualifications whilst gaining practical experience at DWS, training alongside our specialists.
We are always on the lookout for new talent so if you are aged between 16 and 18 and would like to apply for an apprenticeship with DWS, please write to Fergus Murray, Engineering Director at:
