Anisa Ali recently completed her final year at the University of Bradford studying Biomedical Science and won the DWS Microbiology Prize for achieving the highest marks within the microbiology project she undertook.
"My name is Anisa Ali, I am from Bradford, and I studied biomedical science at the University of Bradford. Firstly, I would like to say that I am honoured to have been awarded the Don Whitley Scientific Microbiology Prize! Microbiology has always been a particular interest of mine and I found it to be the most enjoyable module throughout my degree.
In my final year project, I investigated the growth of Gardnerella vaginalis, an anaerobic bacteria that has been identified as the leading causative organism of the infection Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). Throughout my project, I used the Don Whitley Scientific anaerobic chamber, which I found simple and easy to operate. The chamber allowed me to grow the bacteria under different conditions in order to assess its biofilm forming ability.
As for the future, I would like to continue my work in the field of microbiology. I am looking forward to the PhD I will be starting in the next academic year with a project entitled 'Development of In-vitro Infection Models to Test the Efficacy of Antimicrobial Medical Devices'. I hope to then go on and become a researcher in the field of microbiology, specifically looking into antimicrobial resistance."
We wish Anisa all the best for her continued work within the microbiology industry and look forward to seeing what the future holds.
